Booking flights

Before booking or paying any money for your international flights to Tasmania, there are a few things you should think about. Look through the advice on this page and you may be able to save yourself some time and money.

  • If you are under 18 and coming to Australia on a student visa, please do not arrive more than 7 days before the start of school. GETI Tasmania is your legal guardian while you are studying in Tasmania (unless you are living with your own relative). Under GETI’s confirmation of appropriate accommodation and welfare (CAAW) arrangements, this guardianship only takes affect one week before the commencement of school.
  • Your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) must be valid for the entire time you are in Australia on a student visa, beginning the day you arrive. More information on OSHC can be found here.
  • Australia has very strict quarantine arrangements and some items must be declared and inspected on arrival. We can tell you
    more about quarantine here.
  • By booking ahead, it is possible to save some money on your airfare. However, you should not book your flights until after your visa has been approved by the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
  • Before you pay for your booking, make sure you know how much baggage you are allowed to bring onboard. Different airlines have different restrictions and your domestic connection in Australia is liable to allow less than your international airline. Carrying too much baggage can mean expensive fees.
  • There are no direct international flights into Tasmania. Most international flights will first arrive in either Sydney or Melbourne International Airports, where you will need to transfer to a domestic flight. If possible, try to book your flight through Melbourne Airport, it is smaller and easier to find your way around.
  • Give yourself plenty of time between flights so that you will not worry about missing your connecting flight.
  • When booking your domestic connection to Tasmania, make sure that you have booked it to the correct city. There are domestic flights available into Hobart, Launceston and Devonport.
  • If you want to fly into Devonport, you will need to transfer in Melbourne. You may also land in Launceston, although Devonport is over an hour away by car or shuttle bus.
  • If you are planning to be met at the airport by GETI Tasmania, make sure that you have given us your flight details.
