Money

When you are packing, remember that you should not be travelling with a large amount of cash, in your luggage, wallet or purse, in case it is stolen.

You should only plan to bring enough money to cover your first month in Tasmania. About AU$100 in cash and up to AU$2,000 in traveller’s cheques is enough to start with.

It may take a few days to set up a bank account and to transfer money from your own country, so travellers cheques are a good idea. They are safe and secure. Most Australian banks are open between Monday and Friday 9.30 am – 4.00 pm and can exchange a traveller's cheque. Post offices and some travel agencies can also exchange traveller’s cheques.

If you plan on using a credit card or electronic transactions, find out how much your bank will charge you each time you use your card. International transactions can be expensive.
