What to pack

These items are suggestions only and this list is by no means complete, but it should be enough to get you thinking about what to bring to Tasmania.

  • Everyday clothes
  • Warm clothes (Tasmania’s seasonal weather means it can get cold any time of year, so bring sweaters and windcheaters. Thermal underwear is also great for winter)
  • Raincoat
  • A formal outfit
  • Any clothes required by your course or school (Such as a uniform, apron or work clothes)
  • Walking or sports shoes and formal shoes
  • Hat and sunglasses (Sunburn is common in Tasmania)
  • Power adaptors and voltage convertors for electronic devices (Australia uses 3-pronged power points that put out 220-240 volts)
  • Alarm clock
  • Mobile phone (Depending on how long you are staying in Tasmania, you might like to use international roaming with your existing carrier, or to purchase a SIM card once your arrive)
  • Camera
  • Australian currency
  • English dictionary/phrasebook
  • Medical items or prescriptions

These items can all go in your checked luggage. On the plane with you, make sure to carry the following items.

  • Your passport
  • Travel documents
  • GETI Tasmania’s airport pickup details, if this has been arranged
  • Contact phone numbers in Australia, for emergencies
  • Some cash in Australian dollars
  • A warm jacket or sweater that you can wear as needed

When you have a long flight on a plane, it’s a good idea to carry a few things to make you more comfortable, such as a small pillow to help you sleep, or some toiletries to freshen up.
