Learning English will change your life. It will prepare you to study in Australia and improve your career prospects in your own country. The best way to learn English is to be immersed in an English speaking place and culture. So being in a smaller place like Tasmania is better than Sydney or Melbourne, because you won’t be surrounded by people who speak your own language. This might seem scary at first, but over time your English will improve much faster.
Before studying in Tasmania, you must be able speak some English. How much English will depend on which course you want to do.
In Tasmania, English language classes are available for students of the Tasmanian Polytechnic. In Primary Schools, High Schools and Senior Secondary Colleges, EAL – or English as an Additional Language – is provided on campus as a subject for international students.
English language at Tasmanian Government Schools
There is no formal English language requirement for entry into Tasmanian Government Primary Schools, High Schools or Senior Secondary Colleges, but you will need to show that you can speak some English, becasue all classes are delivered in English.
International students are immediately brought into mainstream classes with Australian students. You don’t have to sit any kind of test before starting.
Selected Senior Secondary Colleges do offer prearatory courses for students who need time to adjust to the Australian way of learning, which include EAL lessons.
English language at the Tasmanian Polytechnic
Every course at the Tasmanian Polytechnic has a formal English language requirement. If you need a little help with your English before you start, you can study English at the English Language Centre in Hobart. The centre offers flexible classes with starting dates almost every week throughout the year from late January to November.
Our experienced teachers will work on your English listening, reading, writing and speaking at the same time, in interactive classes. They will want to get to know you, so they can tailor the course to what you are interested in or studying, choosing good topics for conversation and expanding your vocabulary. Assignments will include written essays, speaking presentations, role playing, games and filming each other. There are also excursions, walks through the city, scavenger hunts, cooking and meals to enjoy.
Once your English course is complete, extra help is always available from the Tasmanian Polytechnic’s EAL teachers. These teachers are a valuable resource for international students and can provide regular one-on-one EAL, or advice on assignments as needed.
