Take a little time to expand your horizons, by studying in a Tasmanian Government High School or Senior Secondary College. No matter how much time you need – just a few weeks or a few months – Tasmania welcomes you.
Gap Tasmania is available to students looking to enter a Tasmanian school from Years 7-12 (ages 12 – 18). You can take your pick of the schools or let us recommend some for you. You’ll be living in a Tasmanian Government-approved homestay, which means you’ll have your own private room with an Australian host who will provide meals, advice and assistance wherever possible.
What is a Gap?
This is a chance for you to take some time off from your normal studies, or to use your school holidays to experience life in Australia. You can think of it as an adventure. Depending on what you are studying, you may be able to earn credit towards your own course, or you can just take the time to try something different.
Gap Tasmania is also a fantastic way to improve your English with complete immersion in an English speaking school and homestay.
When can I come?
Gap students can begin their studies anytime during the Australian academic year, from February to November. For example, if your own academic year ends in June but starts again in August, you can spend July in Tasmania. Or you might decide to take a term or a semester off from school. You tell us how many weeks you would like to come and we will work it out for you.
Check our term dates for more information.
What do I study?
The full range of subjects, activities and excursions are made available to all Gap students. In High School from Grades 7-10, there a few choices to make but most of the curriculum is compulsory. When you tell us about yourself in your application and once you arrive, the school’s International Student Advisor will try to understand your needs and place you in the best classes for you.
There is a lot more choice in Tasmania’s Senior Secondary Colleges, with over 100 pre-tertiary academic subjects and combinations of VET qualifications that you can try. Want to try Art? Photography? Drama? Outdoor education? The International Student Advisor is there to help and you can even try a subject for a few weeks just to see if you like it!
Whether or not you earn credit for your studies will depend on what can be negotiated with your own school and how long you can spend in Tasmania. All Australian students are graded on their performance and activities throughout the year, which Gap students will participate in. Senior Secondary College students do sit exams, but Gap students will not have to unless the International Student Advisor thinks you are ready. If you need to earn credit, you will be given the opportunity.
Some activities in Tasmanian schools can be very popular among all students, local and international. So if there is something you really want to do, it is best to apply well ahead of time, to make sure a place is kept for you.
