If you are coming from a big city with millions of people, then Tasmania will seem very quiet. By your standards, our shops will probably close early, or our public transport will be limited at night or on the weekends.
If you prefer big noisy cities and want to be surrounded by lots of other international students, then Tasmania is probably not for you. But if you want to experience something different and have plenty of chances to practice your English, then take a look at Tasmania. Our cities are all just short journeys from beautiful scenery, beaches and bushwalking. Many Tasmanians choose to ride bicycles to get to work. Don’t worry, there is plenty to see and do, it just might not be what you are used to!
Hobart, the capital and largest city in Tasmania with a population just over 210,000, is the second oldest capital in Australia. It is defined by its spectacular location between a beautiful harbour and a mountain backdrop. A 20 minute drive from the centre of the city will take you to an easy walk through temperate rainforest, snow on the mountain, or a lazy day at the beach. Hobart’s busy port borders its city centre, which offers every modern convenience you could ask for, without the long queues.
With a population of 70,000, Launceston is an elegantly relaxed city situated inland in the Tamar Valley, where three rivers meet. The city features many fine axample of historical architecture. Just 15 minutes walk from the city takes you to the magnificent 160-hectare Cataract Gorge, a popular location for concerts, family picnics, swimming and rock climbing, set amidst an ancient extinct volcano.
Situated on the beaches of Tasmania's north west coast, Devonport is the largest city in the region with a population of 25,000. With the Spirit of Tasmania ferry terminal linking the city to Melbourne across the waters of Bass Strait, Devonport is a major tourist centre and provides easy access to a number of Tasmania’s famous nature reserves, including Cradle Mountain.
